Kinja'd!!!

Just got a new MOT for the Mini. Needed even more work doing than I expected, and ended up costing over £600, not including the cost of the test itself. Definetly not what I wanted to hear, but at least it's sorted for another year

What did it need?

A radius arm and lots of brake work make up the most of it. I’ve spoken to someone who knows minis pretty well since, and he can’t see how it cost so much for what work got done. I'll probably try somewhere else next year, but hey, at least it didn't need any welding

Huh. I’ll be pulling off my radius arms in the next few days, and I’ll be doing brake work not long after that. I could see it costing that much, but that’s because the only people here who will even touch it are specialists ($$$). And even some of them won’t do every job (example: the local MG shop wouldn’t touch my clutch).

Is finding people to work on them really that hard on your side of the pond? Here in the UK, virtually everyone everyone above a certain age has spent a lot of time around minis and has probably sorted every common problem plenty of times before. I can’t imagine having to find a specialist for any ‘difficult’ job

Most people around here have never even seen more than one or two Minis in their entire life.

I’ve got a Land Rover shop a few miles from me that’s willing to work on it, but a little pricey for the quality of work. There’s a general European classic shop with a good reputation a bit further away (about 15 miles), but they’re pretty expensive too. The shop I had look at my carb is about 50 miles away, but they’re cheap and mostly MG-specific. Like I said, they wouldn’t touch my clutch, so I spent the 14 hours and did it myself.

Other than that, I’m sure I could find willing mechanics to work on it, but do I trust any of them more than I trust myself? No way.

You have your test and repairs in the same place don’t you? Isn’t there a conflict going on there?

Yeah, definitely, but that’s just how it works. The independent places are especially thorough in the test so they find more work to get done, but I trust them with my car a lot more than the chain places. I’m also not confident enough yet to take on most of the jobs, so I to just deal with it, annoyingly
